Ahilyanagar district has a well-organized network of police stations in major towns and key areas such as Ahilyanagar Taluka, Akole, Sangamner, Rahata, and Shrirampur. Important locations like Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur rely on a strong police presence for crowd management and maintaining peace during festivals. Stations in industrial and agricultural hubs like MIDC, Belwandi, and Supa help protect local businesses. In rural areas, residents typically address policemen as 'saheb' or 'sir,' while acquaintances or relatives may use familiar terms like Mama, Dada, or Kaka.
Jail system
The district comprises two main prisons and twelve sub-jails. The district prisons are situated in Visapur and Ahilyanagar. Visapur Jail is classified as a Class 1 district prison, primarily housing casual prisoners sentenced to up to five years. In contrast, the Ahilyanagar District Prison (formerly called Ahmednagar District Prison) is classified as a Class III facility, intended for local under-trial prisoners and short-term inmates sentenced to six months or less. Visapur prison has a capacity of 832 inmates, while Ahilyanagar’s capacity is significantly smaller at just 48.
Community Perception of Safety
In Ahilyanagar city-like regions, both children and women generally feel secure, allowing them to travel and move freely. Many teenagers from nearby villages commute daily to Ahilyanagar for education, using public transportation without significant concerns for their safety.
A notable incident regarding safety of women in the district was the Kopardi rape case, which involved the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in 2016. This horrific event left a lasting impact on the community, instilling fear and prompting widespread protests demanding justice and raising awareness about caste-based violence, and women's safety.
