Livestock

In Jalgaon district, locals say a diverse range of livestock is commonly reared, including local breeds of cows, buffaloes, goats, horses, and donkeys.

The most well-known indigenous cattle breeds in the region include Khillar, Nimari, Jafrabadi, Usmanabadi, and the local Malvi. Khillar cattle, primarily found in the talukas of Chalisgaon, Bhadgaon, Parola, and Amalner, are valued for their strength in heavy fieldwork and transport, though they produce less milk compared to other breeds. Nimari cattle, recognised for their large red and white coats, are particularly suited for tasks such as water lifting and heavy ploughing. The local Malvi breed, consisting of smaller white-colored animals, is preferred for light draught work and road transport.

Changing Practices in Livestock Rearing

One of the most prominent shifts in livestock farming is the transition from traditional grazing methods to more modern indoor feeding practices. In the past, farmers would take their animals to various natural pastures for grazing. Today, however, livestock are often housed indoors, where they receive all necessary food and care, resulting in reduced outdoor exposure.

Facilities such as Bhaichand Hirachand Raisoni Goshala in Talegaon and Sanjay Patil's Cow House in Tarkheda exemplify this modern approach to livestock rearing.

Pastoralist Communities in the District

The Dhangar community is the primary pastoralist group in Jalgaon, with the Gavli Dhangars being a notable sub-group located in the northern Maharashtra region of Khandesh. Some members of this community inhabit the forested hill areas of the Western Ghats. Also referred to as Dange or Mhaske, the Gavlis are a sub-caste within the Dhangar community, and their language, known as "Ahrani" or Gavli boli, is shared with the Bhil community.

Traditionally, the Gavlis have relied on rearing sheep and goats, moving with their flocks to seek out suitable grazing lands. Their extensive knowledge of animal husbandry and grazing management plays a vital role in the agricultural heritage of the Jalgaon district, underscoring their significance in local pastoral practices.

Locals say that the Gavlis possess a deep understanding of the terrain, allowing them to identify the best grazing lands even in challenging seasons. Their traditional knowledge, passed down through generations, helps sustain their livestock and maintain ecological balance in the region.

Veterinary Care

Jalgaon district is home to around 13 veterinary hospitals and dispensaries spread across key towns such as Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Erandol, Yawal, Pachora, Edlabad, Amalner, Savda, Chopda, Parola, Chalisgaon, Bhadgaon, and Jamner. These facilities, managed by the District Local Board of Jalgaon, provide crucial veterinary care, with government support through free services and grants-in-aid.

Some of the other veterinary services for pet owners in urban areas are:

  • Doggy Care Clinic, Vyankatesh Colony
  • Premier Pet Care Clinic. Ganesh Colony

Meanwhile, rural areas rely on government-run district veterinary hospitals, such as the one in Betawad, Shindkheda, Amalner, which cater primarily to livestock and farm animals.

Important Livestock Markets

One of the most significant markets is the Cattle Market Jalgaon, located at MIDC, which is likely the largest and most prominent livestock market in the district.

Another important market in the district is the Bail Bazaar (bull market) in Jalgaon, where farmers gather specifically to trade bulls.
