Police & Judiciary

The Mumbai Police, under Maharashtra Police, maintain law and order in the Mumbai Suburban district through a structured system of six zones, each overseen by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Together, these zones manage around 60 police stations, focusing on crime prevention, traffic management, and public safety.
Each station, led by a Senior Police Inspector, serves local communities, handling complaints and investigations. Officers are often addressed as “saheb” or “inspector,” reflecting respect in urban settings. Specialized units, including the Cyber Crime Cell, Traffic Branch, and Crime Branch, operate district-wide to tackle online fraud, traffic congestion, and organized crime.
Community Perception of Safety
According to locals, residents of the Mumbai Suburban district generally feel safe due to active police patrols and quick response times in areas like Bandra and Borivali. Community policing and public awareness campaigns strengthen trust. However, urban challenges like theft in crowded markets, such as Linking Road, and rising cybercrimes raise concerns. High-profile cases, like financial scams, occasionally highlight safety issues, but the police’s use of CCTV surveillance and cyber units mitigates risks. The judiciary’s role in resolving disputes reinforces public confidence, though delays in case backlogs can frustrate some residents.

Please Note
- NCRB data represents combined figures for both Mumbai City and Suburban districts. For consistency, the same figures appear under each district.
- Data from District Statistical Abstracts comes in financial years, but is graphed below in calendar years (2015 in our graph means FY 2015-16).
- The District Statistical Abstracts are in Marathi. Translations were done carefully, but some titles or details may differ. There may be some data entry errors. Please report any issues you find.
- Sometimes districts without data may show empty graphs. We've removed them but let us know if any remain.
- Some graphs may not render correctly. A hard refresh (Ctrl/Command +Shift +R) usually fixes this.
