Notes on Graphs

  • Data from District Statistical Abstracts comes in financial years, but is graphed below in calendar years (2015 in our graph means FY 2015-16).
  • The District Statistical Abstracts are in Marathi. Translations were done carefully, but some titles or details may differ. There may be some data entry errors. Please report any issues you find.
  • Livestock Census data is being compiled for this chapter and will be added soon.
  • Sometimes districts without data may show empty graphs. We've removed them but let us know if any remain.
  • Some graphs may not render correctly. A hard refresh (Ctrl/Command +Shift +R) usually fixes this.

Livestock

In the Nanded district, the Deoni cattle breed is common, particularly in Kandhar, alongside the red Kandhari breed. Locals say Deoni cattle are preferred for their hardiness and better milk yield, averaging 3 to 4 seers per day, while the red Kandhari, historically associated with royal breeding since the 4th century CE, produces only 1 to 2 seers over a 6–7 month lactation period.

Fisheries

According to the Nanded District Gazetteer, 1971, fisheries in the district were classified into cultured fisheries and riverine fisheries.

Cultured fisheries were primarily practiced in the district's tanks and small irrigation projects. At the time, 122 tanks were covering approximately 1,166.305 hectares (2,884 acres), providing a suitable environment for carp culture on a scientific basis. These water bodies contributed significantly to local fish production.

In addition to cultured fisheries, riverine fisheries were prevalent in Nanded, supported by major rivers such as the Godavari, Penganga, Lendi, Manad, and Kayadhu, along with various nalas and rivulets. These water sources created favorable conditions for fishing activities in the region.

The district was home to a diverse range of commercially important fish species, including Chana marulius, Chana striatus, Chana leuco punctatus, Mastacembelus armatus, Anguilla anguilla, Notopterus notopterus, Barbus tor, Barbus sarana, Labeo fimbriatus, and Labeo calbasu.

The fishing community in Nanded comprised several groups, including Machindar Bhoi, Partikwar, Nelewar, Pardesi Bhoi, Kadi Bhoi, Dembhar Bhoi, Khar Bhoi, and Koli (Bhoi). These communities played a crucial role in the local economy, supplying fish for both local consumption and markets.
